When the compressor is started, the electric current flows into the running winding.

The torque generated by the induction of the main coil is not sufficient to operate the compressor motor.

When the compressor is started to increase torque by starting torque, the motor needs the assistance of power gained by carrying electric current in the auxiliary winding of the compressor motor.

After the motor rotation reaches ± 75% of its maximum rotation speed, the motor no longer needs additional starting torque, so that extra torque can be removed or broken. To cut off the electric current flow of the auxiliary coil, used a circuit breaker component called the initial relay.

There are several types of starting relays, including:

1. Relay current


This relay operates based on the induction of a magnetic field from the current flowing into the main coil.

When the compressor motor is started, the current flowing into the main coil is higher than the nominal current but this large current is not enough to rotate the compressor shaft.

This flow makes the magnetic field induction larger on the relay so that the relay contacts are connected (running the relay contact lever lift). With contact connected to the relay, the electric current then flows into the auxiliary coil.

The current flowing into the auxiliary coil creates extra torque in the motor so the compressor can rotate the shaft. As the compressor shaft turns, the current flowing into the main coil reduces to its nominal value.

When the motor rotation reaches 75% of its maximum rotation speed, the incorporation of a magnetic field on the relay coil is no longer able to lift the relay contacts so that the flow toward the auxiliary coil is blocked.

Even if the excess torque generated by the Ux capillary coil is lost, the motor can still rotate because the load is already low. This type of relay should not be unlike in its installation.

2. Solid State Relay (PTC Relay)


This relay assistant operates based on the heat generated from the current flowing into the coil.

When the compressor motor is started, in addition to the main coil, the current flows through the disc into the auxiliary coil which is sensitive to temperature changes.

The change in temperature on this disk causes a change in the value of its resistance. Disk temperature is as small, the resistance value is, spring. When the motor coil has not received the current, the disc is in cold condition (the resistance value is 15-35Ω to 28-32 ° C).

When the coil starts to receive electric voltage, the flow will flow directly into the main coil and the flow into the supporting coil will pass through the disc.

As the current passes, the disk temperature then increases so that the disc assistant will stop flowing into the coil. After the motor rotation reaches 75% of the maximum rotation, the current flowing into the auxiliary coil will be very small.
