Centrifugal compressor

Centrifugal compressor is mostly used in more than 300 tons capacity of refrigerating system.

In this type of compressor, the vapor is moved in a circular motion as centrifugal force. An impeller which is a disk with dial blades spins rapidly inside this compressor housing causing the gas to gain velocity.

A diffuser converts this energy into pressure energy and is then discharged into the condenser through the discharge line.

The pumping efficiency increase with compressor speed, hence this type of compressor are designed to operate at high speed.

Rotary compressor

The rotary compressor divided two types. One has blades of second vanes that rotate with the shaft.

The other type has the blade which remains stationary and is part of the compressor body assembly. Both types, the vapor from the suction line is drawn into the compressor cylinder through the suction port.

 As the blade rotate trapped in the space of compressor head of the blade is compressed into high pressure gas of blades can range from two to eight in a single system.

Scroll compressor


The scroll compressor has one fixed scroll which remains stationary and another moving or orbiting scroll that through the use of swing link.

When this happen the refrigerant between the two scroll are slowly pushed to the center of the two scrolls causing the reduction of the volume of the refrigerant. It is than discharge though the center port to the condenser.

The advantage of this compressor is that it has fewer moving parts and less torque variation compared to the other  compressor or reciprocating compressor. This compressor most advantage is translate to a smooth operation.

Screw compressor

The screw compressor uses a pair to helical rotors where it traps and compresses the gas as the rotors revolve in the cylinder. In HVAC they are usually in systems with 50 ton capacity and above.

The male rotor and the female rotor are build inside the cylinder. The low pressure refrigerant enters of the compressor and resultant high pressure refrigerant is discharged by the discharge line into the opposite end to the condenser.

Reciprocating compressor

 The reciprocating compressor uses piston to compressor the refrigerant driven by a crank shaft in a straight line back forth motion.

This rotary motion of the compressor is use to motor and the construction is quite similar to that of an automobile engine. The piston moves up and down inside compressor cylinder.

Vapor from the suction line is moved through the compressor suction valve or suction line as the compressor piston move down position.

As the piston moves up position , it compresses the vapor refrigerant which is then pushed through the discharge valve into the condenser. The compressor may has more then one cylinder which is also know as multiple cylinder compressor.

The common ones are the two cylinder, four cylinder and eight cylinder compressor.
